Three NUST MISIS Projects Receive the Support of the RSF

April 04, 2018
The Russian Science Foundation published the results of the contest to support new and the continuation of leading research.

Scientists“Three NUST MISIS projects received the support of the RSF. These are breakthrough research projects devoted to studying the basic properties of materials and identifying patterns that can determine the development of technologies to create materials with desired properties for many years”, said Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS.

NUST MISIS Professors Igor Abrikosov, Dmitry Shtansky, and Viktor Cherdyntsev are the projects` supervisors.

As Professor Abrikosov said, his lab`s “Modeling and development of new materials” project is called “The identification of fundamental ratios of materials in extreme conditions”.

“The main aim of the grant is to research the behavior of materials at ultrahigh pressures and temperatures. Why is it necessary? By studying materials in a wide range of pressures and temperatures, you get something like a panoramic map of the material`s behavior. It`s like observing a valley from both its lowest point and from a helicopter. It`s clear that from the helicopter it`s easier to observe: the shape, slope, etc. The same [is true] here—by expanding the studied range of parameters, we can create a theory of interaction between the external conditions and the material properties and use it to predict the properties of new materials that are just being developed. As part of our project, we are planning to study systems based on iron, nitride, and carbide materials, and in particular material properties that determine behavior of the earth`s mantle and core. Understanding it will help us to use the obtained knowledge to develop materials in ‘terrestrial’ conditions”, said Professor Abrikosov.

In turn, Professor Shtansky stated that his project being implemented at the NUST MISIS Scientific and Educational Center “MISIS-ISMAN” is called “The development and production of nanostructured, nanocomposite, multilayer and functional gradient coatings with increased erosion, corrosion, and abrasive resistance and fatigue strength”. The project is aimed at solving the important scientific problem of improving erosion, corrosion, abrasive and fatigue strength of industrial products and structures. The lab increases the stability of products by depositing nanostructured, nanocomposite, multilayer and functionally gradient coatings onto them.

By continuing the supported project, scientists intend to upgrade their installations for the realization of new opportunities for combined technologies which combine pulse arc evaporation, electro-spark alloying, and magnetron sputtering. They are also planning to develop new technologies for protective coatings spraying, which will be implemented after the installation modernization.

Viktor Cherdyntsev, Associate Professor at the NUST MISIS Department for Physical Chemistry and Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, heads a project called “Controlled formation of adhesion bonds on partition surfaces for the optimization of the functional characteristics of composites”. If the project succeeds, it will make it faster and easier to create composites with desired properties.

As part of this project, they will study the nature of interfacial interaction in composite materials based on polysulfone and polyethersulfone. There are also plans to determine the mechanisms that will be capable of contributing to the formation of a solid boundary section in the polymer-fiber system. The second block of tasks is to choose the optimal methods and surface modification modes for the filters that will be used. Understanding the influence of modification methods on the physico-mechanical and thermophysical characteristics of composite materials reinforced with modified fibers will also play a critical role in the project.
