The Role of Academic Writing Centers
Structure and Management of Academic Writing CentersProgram Opening Session via videoconference: On Monday morning, Ms. Sara Delson, the U.S. Department of State, Ms. Eurica Huggins and Mr. Daniel Brookmyer, Institute of International Education project staff, will conduct a brief program opening via videoconference from Washington, DC, to welcome you and invite each participant to speak briefly about his or her background, current responsibilities and goals for this project. The U.S. Department of State and IIE staff will then describe the project, highlighting how the various project components will address the diverse interests expressed by each participant. A brief administrative discussion will follow.

Writing Center sessions strive to address writers’ stated needs while attending to relevant disciplinary, rhetorical, grammatical, and stylistic concerns. Consultants provide feedback and advice that promote writers’ abilities to communicate successfully and think critically in response to complex, evolving expectations of readers in academia, the workplace and society. Representatives will provide an overview of the Center and its services to students and faculty.
University of Colorado at Boulder, The Program for Writing and Rhetoric (PWR): PWR is an active community of teachers and scholars committed to making writing central to the undergraduate education of its students. They train students to think critically about reading and guide them to produce writing that effectively shapes and expresses ideas in any context—academic, civic, professional, or personal. You will meet with teachers and scholars to learn about teaching practices to support students.
University of Colorado Denver Writing Center: One-on-one and small-group sessions, directed by trained professional writing consultants, are tailored to support students and build more accomplished writers. A representative will talk about services for faculty such as professional development seminars, custom in-class workshops, and both individual and departmental course support. You will also learn about success stories of students who, by participating in the writing process guided by the Writing Center, developed scientific writingMetropolitan State University of Denver Writing Center (MSU): MSU Denver’s writing center works with writers in all areas of study, at all levels, in all stages of their writing processes and with all types of writing projects. MSU offers students resources for developing as writers and thinkers, sharing their work and ideas and receiving thoughtful feedback on work in progress in a practical, friendly, collaborative environment. Representatives will share their overarching goals, mission, and strategies for what they do. They will provide a background on how they work with students and participants may have an opportunity to observe a training session.
Pearson Publishing: Pearson is a leading textbook publisher in the field of education. Pearson’s publishing division represents the publishing industry’s leading imprints for authoritative and cutting-edge technical and professional information. The company publishes thousands of books, eBooks and videos per year. Representatives will discuss qualifications for submitting academic work for publication. The meeting will also focus on its digital media work as an innovative approach to online learning, next-generation assessments, data platforms, and other approaches that support learning that empower educators and students.International Writing Centers Association (IWCA): The International Writing Centers Association, a National Council of Teachers of English affiliate founded in 1983, fosters the development of writing center directors, tutors and staff by sponsoring meetings, publications, and other professional activities. IWCA encourages scholarship connected to writing center-related fields and provides an international forum for writing center concerns. A local representative of IWCA will provide an overview of the association, how it assists writing centers nationally and internationally with its development and publications.
