Facilitator’s Bio

Rich Furman, MFA, MSW, PhD, is full professor of social work at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Rich has 25 years of experience as a clinical social worker, organizational leader, therapist, coach and scholar. He has held leadership positions in higher education and non-profit organizations, and was the founding director of one of the largest community based, children’s wraparound programs in the United States. He is the author of over 15 books and 120 peer-reviewed articles, and recognized as one of the international leaders in expressive, arts-based qualitative methodologies. Rich provides strengths-based, insight-oriented coaching for scholars and leaders at all stages of their careers. Rich has conducted workshops on writing and publishing throughout Asia, Latin America, and Europe. In 2019 he crossed an item off his bucket list by completing a of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction from Queens University of Charlotte’s Latin America MFA program.

The English Language Testing Society (ELTSociety) is pleased to invite you to register for our inaugural 2021 ELTS Virtual Conference at no cost, taking place on October 15th and 16th, 2021. Registration is now full but please join our waitlist today.

ELTSociety was launched in the fall of 2019 as an international non-profit association for professionals interested in the field of English language testing for persons whose native language is not English. The theme of the conference is Crosscurrents: Proficiency Testing & Classroom Assessment. The conference will focus on both proficiency testing and classroom assessment, as well as the intersections, commonalities, and differences that characterize these practices.  The sessions will include presentations on timely topics such as test designs, formative and summative assessments, and students’ evaluations.

The conference will feature two keynote speakers, Dr. Micheline Chaloub-Deville and Dr. Shahrzad Saif. Dr. Micheline Chalhoub-Deville is a Professor of Educational Research Methodology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and she will be speaking about Large-Scale Tests And Evolving Constructs. The  second keynote speaker is Dr. Shahrzad Saif, a professor of Applied Linguistics at the Departément de langues, linguistic et traduction, Université Laval (Quebec, Canada). The title of her address is the “Test Impact: The Effects Of High Stakes Testing And Classroom Assessment On Learning Outcomes”.

We’re excited to invite you to the (long-awaited, once postponed, and now finally happening!) Virtual International Symposium, ReVision & ReForm: Teaching Writing Across Borders hosted by the Expository Writing Program at New York University. The event is free and open to all.

The symposium will feature a keynote speech by Suresh Canagarajah from Penn State University, presentations by many writing teachers and researchers in the field, and even a brief creative writing workshop. Supported by NYU Abu Dhabi and the English Department at NYU, the event will foreground interdisciplinarity and cross-cultural collaborations in teaching writing. There will be panels on social justice, translingual pedagogies, play and experimentation in the writing classroom, and much more. One of the highlights of the conference will be an interactive student-led discussion on writing-related topics.

We will be meeting over two days: Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24.
